General Information
The City of Ames Parks and Recreation Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Water Safety Instructor.
Candidates interested in this opportunity can expect to work Sunday mornings, September through May.
Water Safety Instructors are directly accountable to Recreation Assistant-Aquatics and Aquatics Manager and adjunctly accountable to the Recreation Superintendent and the Director of Parks & Recreation.
Examples of Essential Job Functions
Teach skills for level assigned; ensure safety of all participants; enforce all aquatic facility polices, rules and regulations; recognize and respond to any emergency situations; evaluate and record participants skills; inspect equipment before use and report any issues to lesson coordinator; complete and submit required reports of a swim lesson; and participate in scheduled in-service sessions.

Qualifications
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Prior experience is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications: Current American Red Cross or YMCA water safety instructor certificate. Equivalent certifications issued by other organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Candidates not possessing these certifications may still apply; the City will provide a Water Safety Instructor certification course at the reduced rate of $45. This fee will directly cover the employee's certificate fee due to the Red Cross plus course materials.
Please attach WSI/Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED if certified.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Necessary to Perform Essential Functions: Thorough knowledge of water safety and application of skills; knowledgeable of child development.
Ability to teach and relate positively to participants; ability to understand, appreciate and embody the City of Ames Core Values; ability to maintain an exceptional level of safety and pool facilities; ability to maintain a professional appearance at all times while on site; ability to maintain a professional demeanor (calm and courteous) at all times while on site.

Selection Process:
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, an interview, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.
