Location: Design Project Section, Office of Design in Ames Shift: Days, Monday through Friday The Office of Design is looking to hire a Design Technician Specialist that will be part of a team designing highway improvement projects and construction plans that will be used to enhance the state and national transportation systems in Iowa. This position is an essential member of a highway design team developing innovative transportation improvement projects. The Design Technician Specialist will assist leading the develop of highway plans under immediate supervision of the principal engineer of a project. Shift: Days, Monday through Friday. Typical Responsibilities:
Participates on a team that makes decisions that effectively balance mobility, environmental impacts, property impacts, cost and long term maintenance.
Produces highway project plans that are consistent with Iowa DOT design guidance.
Calculates roadway geometric features including vertical and horizontal highway alignments.
Designs roadway intersections, drainage systems and traffic control plans.
Develops 3-dimensional computer models that represent the proposed roadway.
Calculates material quantities that will be needed to build the proposed roadway project.
Prepares final details needed to clearly communicate the intention of plans to a road contractor.
Uses advanced computer applications and processes in all aspects of the photogrammetric process.
Ability to successfully utilize advanced software applications.
Analyzes challenges, defines successful solution alternatives and proactively solves problems.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from high school or GED and eight years of full-time experience in design drafting, cartography, photogrammetry or right of way;
an equivalent combination of one year experience in engineering survey, soils survey, land survey or construction inspection for each year of the required design drafting experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting thirty semester hours of post high school education for each year of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting thirty semester hours of vocational technical school in engineering technology, design drafting, or cartography for two years of the required experience to a maximum substitution of two years;
