Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Department of 4-H Youth Development with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking qualified candidates for a position of Field Specialist III – 4-H Youth Development within the Field Team South in Johnson and Iowa Counties.

The 4-H Youth Development Field Specialist will provide leadership and develop the capacity of youth, volunteers, and professionals to plan, implement, and evaluate a series of progressive educational programs and learning experiences that work toward achieving the outcomes of effective leadership, productive citizenship, outstanding communication, and successful learning. These outcomes are reached through the Iowa 4-H program priorities of healthy living, STEM, citizenship and leadership, and communication and the arts.

Responsibilities include:

  • Strategic Plan Support, 4-H Program Priority Support, Program Leadership and Program Evaluation
  • Volunteer Growth and Support
  • Staff Support and Training

The Field Specialist III will create and deliver comprehensive and complex interdisciplinary programming; conduct and analyze needs assessment activities and identify, develop, and implement innovative and creative ways to meet clients’ needs; establishes, organizes, and facilitates networks and coalitions at the local, area, and state levels to build community capacity; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise at the local, area, state, and national level.

The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with a wide variety of individuals and groups. The candidate will also have the ability to establish partnerships with community leaders. Cooperates with and informs Regional Directors, County Extension Councils, County Extension Staff, Field Specialists, and State Program Leader of their projects and has a positive working relationship with staff and clients in assigned geographic and subject matter areas. Strong organizational skills are also a necessity as this position will be expected to work on multiple projects.

Required Education and Experience

Master’s degree and 5 years of related experience.

Master’s degree in Youth/Child Development, Education, Public Administration, Community Development, Public Service and Administration, Sociology, Psychology, Social Work, or related field.

Additional years of experience.

Experience with youth outreach.

Experience building relationships with multiple stakeholder groups (i.e. coworkers, community organizations, families, youth and volunteers).

Experience creating inclusive environments and programs for youth with disabilities or special needs.

Experience creating inclusive environments and programs for youth from diverse populations.

Experience with developing, implementing, and evaluating innovative positive youth development programming.

Experience with networking and building community connections.

Experience with staff and volunteer supervision.

Experience with volunteer development.

Multi-lingual language skills.

Additional Information

This position is part of the Field Team South and will serve Southeast Iowa in Johnson and Iowa Counties with a base office location to be negotiable within the counties served.

This position requires the ability to travel in order to carry out the duties of this position, and candidates must have access to reliable transportation. The duties of this position require willingness to work evenings and weekends.
