Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

The Iowa State University Library is seeking an experienced, creative, and highly collaborative Web Developer (Systems Analyst I/II) to engage in the design, implementation, testing, and maintenance for the Library’s growing portfolio of websites and web applications. This position will work within the Information Technology Division, in close collaboration with the University Library Communications Team, University IT, and external agencies, to improve the ease of use, visual appeal, and digital accessibility of library websites and web applications.

This position will provide innovative, user-centered leadership for the ISU Library’s front-end and internal websites (i.e., intranet), and vendor-provided systems. The University Library web presence encompasses the main website (, Special Collections & University Archives, Digital Initiatives, Digital Repository, and several Springshare products, including LibGuides CMS. This position will be assigned other digital library projects as the need arises.

The Web Developer will perform site design, focused on creating pages and interfaces that follow UI/UX best practices, industry standards, and web content accessibility guidelines (WCAG 2.0, Section 508). They will collaborate with a graphic designer to update and maintain the Library’s website to follow university trademark, marketing, and brand guidelines; assist with ongoing user research and usability testing efforts related to the Library’s web presence and services; stay current with evolving web application technologies and industry standards.

Additional responsibilities include collaborating with librarians, content owners, and authors to ensure that the Library’s web presence is relevant, accurate, up-to-date, user-centered, accessible, adaptive, and cohesive; meet with stakeholders to gather requirements, develop specifications, estimate effort, monitor and track progress, provide status updates, and gather feedback for web projects. They will lead and execute broad content management efforts such as content audits and content migrations; coordinate and contribute to the resolution of website problems and bug reports.

The successful candidate possesses the ability to interpret and apply complex technical information; apply knowledge of industry standards and tools for web application development, user interfaces/user experience, and digital accessibility; develop and use APIs to integrate web applications with other systems; show initiative, strong interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and related experience.

Supplemental Required Education and Experience

System Support Specialist II: Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 1 year of related experience.

Preferred Education and Experience

Experience in an academic environment

Experience managing a large collection of web pages and ensuring consistent appearance and functionality across different systems

Experience developing websites that interact with database systems like MySQL, SQL Server & Oracle

Experience with Web standards and scripting using HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript or JQuery
