We are looking to grow our teams with people who share our energy and enthusiasm for making that mission a reality every single day.Location: Bridges and Structures Bureau – Methods Unit, Project Delivery Division, Ames, IowaShift: Days, Monday through Friday Flex time availableThe Bridges and Structures Bureau is looking to hire an experienced civil/structural engineer to lead our Methods Unit. This position is responsible for ensuring that designers have the tools and guidance for consistent and timely plan development as well as leading essential programs for the Iowa DOT. This position requires an individual capable of applying advanced structural and engineering design principles of a broad scope and complexity. This position requires an engineer licensed to practice civil/structural engineering in the State of Iowa.Typical Responsibilities:

  • Developing and maintaining of design standards used by the Iowa DOT for preparation of structural plans.

  • Coordinating technical training for design staff.

  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of the Bridge Bureau Design Manual.

  • Coordinating design standard activities with other engineer specialist positions within the office as well as lead worker for four additional staff positions.

  • Participating on various teams making decisions that balance safety, mobility, environmental impacts, cost and long-term maintenance. In addition, will serve as a contact for industry representatives to maintain workable and efficient design procedures and specifications.

  • Coordinating with other bureaus to integrate design procedures and construction details into standard practices.

  • Individual must demonstrate knowledge of the AASHTO LRFD Design Specifications as well as the Iowa DOT Construction Specifications.

Additional Requirements:

  • Responsible for maintaining a professional engineer’s license by meeting educational requirements and all other professional obligations required by the State of Iowa

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Licensed as a professional engineer, and the equivalent of two years of full-time licensed professional transportation or related civil engineering experience. Must have, or prior to appointment, must obtain an active Iowa professional engineering license through the Iowa Professional Licensing Bureau – Engineering and Land Surveying Examination Board;


a Masters degree in chemical, civil, construction, environmental, materials, structural, or transportation engineering; engineering management; or an area closely related to transportation engineering may be substituted for one year of the required experience;
