UnityPoint Health Flight Paramedic Training Program in Anamosa, Iowa

The Paramedic is a member of the healthcare team at Jones Regional Medical Center (JRMC).

Below is the general outline of the Flight Paramedic Program. This program does have a 3 year commitment and occurs while working as a Paramedic for Jones Regional Medical Center.

PURPOSE:

To encourage Paramedics to enroll in the ground to flight 3-year training and retention program as provided by Jones Regional Medical Center, Anamosa Area Ambulance, and LifeGuard Air Ambulance. This is an advanced program about strengthening transport medics and preparing them for future flight opportunities.

POLICY:

  • It is the philosophy of JRMC to develop employees to their maximum potential. This is a 3-year training program that is offered at no cost to eligible full-time associates who make this employment commitment. (unless there is termination within those 3 years)

  • Candidates will go through an application process.

  • Previous service within JRMC, Anamosa Ambulance, or UnityPoint will not count toward the 3 commitment

CURRICULUM:

Year One

  • Grooming, Building the Resume

  • JRMC Emergency Department Patient Care

  • Six 1-Hour Advanced EMS Education/LifeGuard Classes.

  • Safety Training/Orientation Flight with LifeGuard Cedar Rapids.

  • Job Shadow with LifeFlight Air Ambulance Services from UnityPoint Health Des Moines.

  • Just Culture training

  • NRP

Year Two

  • Six 1-Hour Advanced EMS Education/LifeGuard Classes

  • Transport Professional Advanced Trauma Classes (PHTLS, ATLS)

  • Job Shadow with LifeFlight Air Ambulance Services from UnityPoint Health Des Moines

  • Successfully complete CCP program.

  • Must have 2 years of experience as a full time practicing paramedic.

  • CCP will be delayed until year 3 if the candidate does not meet the experience requirement.

Year Three

  • Trauma Simulation

  • Medical Simulation

  • CCP training rotation in ICU, CCU, NICU/PICU.

General:

  • Assumes leadership position in the field, determining priorities, guiding other EMTs in the delivery of quality patient care.

  • Initiates care using standing orders within their scope of practice.

  • Follows direction of the physician or physician designee by telephone or radio communications when not using standing orders.

  • Demonstrates sound medical judgement following EMS protocols in assessing and observing patients, interpreting signs and symptoms, and initiating appropriate action and intervention.

  • Works cooperatively with law enforcement and fire department at scenes.

  • Assists in all areas as needed and directed.

  • Assists with performance improvement and the collection, compilation and reporting of data as directed.

  • Attend meetings and serves on committees as requested.

Ambulance

  • Functions under guidelines specified in Chapter 141, Code of Iowa

  • Operates ambulance in all weather conditions, having a Class D Chauffeur license.

  • Operates two-way radio system.

  • Reads maps and plat books correctly.

  • Restocks and cleans ambulance after each call.

  • Performs trip sheet patient documentation, ASP form documentation, and uses appropriate authorization forms.

  • Performs daily rig check on A-25 and A-26.

  • Keeps ambulance, equipment and garage clean and disinfected.

  • Performs ambulance office duties as assigned.

Emergency Room

  • Performs emergency skills within the scope of practice.

  • Performs documentation of patient care, procedures and vitals as directed.

  • Assists with staffing and/or assisting in ER per Medical Charge RN.

Security

  • Performs security rounds if working the night shift, checking that all entrance doors and alarms are secured.

  • Monitors the security cameras as able.

Other

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

  • Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Completes variance reports per policy.

This position warrants access to patient records.

Education/Requirements

  • Minimum Education/Experience/Certification

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Current State of Iowa Paramedic license

  • Valid Iowa Driver’s license, non-commercial Class D-3 chauffeurs license

  • Current BCLS certification

  • Current ACLS certification – Paramedics

  • PALS

Skills

  • Ability to prioritize assignments
