Job Description:

Job Title: Label Verification Specialist

Department: Compliance and Food Protection

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function:

The Label Verification Specialist will review labeling, including front panel, nutrition, allergen, and ingredient information for products produced in Hy-Vee food production facilities. The incumbent will monitor and document accuracy of labels to insure compliance of products with USDA and FDA labeling regulations.

Reporting Relations:

Accountable and Reports to: FSQA Manager- Fresh Commissary

Reports to you: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Insure the accuracy of label information, including ingredient, allergen, nutrition and product statements of Hy-Vee products in compliance of government regulations (USDA, FDA, etc.) and company guidelines.

  • Utilize ESHA Genesis and/or other nutrition labeling software to check ingredient, allergen, and/or nutrition statement information for labeling compliance.

  • Reviews label information, ingredients, allergens, and nutrition statements prior to release to production to insure accuracy and compliance.

  • Collaborate with product development, FSQA, and operations on label review and maintenance to insure regulatory compliance.

  • Print and review labels as required for production operations or product changes.

  • Produces and confirms accuracy of labels used by production operations on a daily basis.

    Education and Experience:

  • Knowledge and experience with food labeling regulations (USDA, FDA).

  • High school degree required, post-secondary degree in science or closely related field desired.

  • Background in food production, R&D, quality assurance, food service, or food retail a plus.

Skills and Abilities Required to Perform Job:

  • Must have the ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals and percentages and have computer skills.

  • Understand the need for and maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to adapt to changes throughout daily operation and respond to deadline.

    Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to physically perform light work exerting up to 20-pounds of force occasionally.

  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20-inches to more than 20-feet with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, pushing, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:

  • The duties of this position are performed mostly in an office setting.

  • Frequent deadlines exist while handling multiple tasks.

  • Daily contact occurs with employees and office personnel.

    Equipment Used to Perform Job:

    Personal Computer, photo copier, fax machine and office phone system.
