TRANSPORTATION AIDE – IOWA DOT VEHICLE & MOTOR CARRIER SERVICES

Come join the Iowa DOT to serve as a temporary Transportation Aide supporting the Vehicle & Motor Carrier Services Bureau (VMCS)! We administer the statewide system for titling, registration and license plate issuance for 4.5 million personal vehicles in Iowa and support commercial vehicle title and registration.
In this position, you will fulfill applications and handle record archiving for a variety of products including vehicle titles, persons-with-disability parking products and personal license plates, including Iowa’s new and popular Blackout and Flying Our Colors plates.
We are seeking an individual who has experience entering data into a complex IT transactional system to fulfill orders and can communicate effectively with customers by e-mail, letter or phone to resolve issues and ensure successful transactions.
We offer a flexible schedule with a minimum of 30 hours and a maximum of 40 hours per week. The position will last 18-26 weeks, depending on the number of weekly hours worked.

This position supports the customer service needs of the Vehicle & Motor Carrier Services Bureau (VMCS). We administer the statewide system for titling, registration and license plate issuance for 4.5 million personal vehicles in Iowa and for commercial vehicle title and registration.
The specific tasks for this position may include any or all of the following:
Review and fulfill applications for pro-rate titles used by commercial vehicles
Review and fulfill applications for titles issued to vehicles owned by government agencies
Review and fulfill applications for personal license plates
Review and fulfill applications for persons-with-disabilities parking products
Scan and archive records for all these functions and others as directed in VMCS
An applicant for this position should have the following experience and skills:
Ability to review applications for accuracy based on established laws, rules and procedures
Experience entering data into a complex IT transactional system to fulfill orders or programs
Customer service experience for fulfillment of mail and on-line orders
Written communication experience, especially to communicate clearly and concisely with customers through e-mails and business letters
Oral communication experience, specifically to resolve customer issues through phone calls
Ability to work with minimal supervision once assignments are provided
Hours:Minimum 30 hours per week / maximum 40 hours per week (negotiable)
Hours must be filled between 7:30 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday
Employment will last 18-26 weeks, depending on number of weekly hours worked
This position works in a standard office environment. Iowa DOT currently has Covid-19 protocols in place to promote the safety and health of staff, customers and visitors. The Transportation Aide will be expected to comply with wearing a mask whenever away from his/her personal desk, workspace sanitizing procedures and self-checks for Covid-19 protocols.
The Iowa DOT has a smoke-free workplace and provides free employee parking.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Designated positions in this class require possession of a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority, a valid Class A or B (level determined by the appointing authority) Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and subsequently maintained in order to continue employment.
If a CDL is not required, designated positions are required to have and maintain a minimum of a valid Class C Non-Commercial Operator's License.
In conjunction with Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (parts 40 and 382), designated positions in this job class require a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.
Employees in designated positions must be able to travel and may be required to stay away from home overnight during assignments.
Employees in designated positions must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.
