CITY OF BURLINGTON Engineering Department in BURLINGTON, Iowa
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES:
This is a technical position that produces plans, details, specifications, designs for infrastructure upgrades and/or replacements. Work includes project development before construction to include field surveys, construction planning and construction bidding documents, drafting, cost estimating, permitting, and various regulatory document preparations. Work includes project administration during construction phase of projects to include process inspection, material testing/inspection, recording constructed quantities, surveying and planning for formal plan changes, tabulation of quantities and contractor payments. Typical infrastructure projects include sanitary and storm sewers, roadway paving, ADA pedestrian facilities, and parking lots. Much of the work is performed in coordination with standards and practices of the Iowa DOT, Iowa DNR, and/or local ordinances/codes. The engineering department also reviews private development site and subdivision plans, and manages/permits private contractors work when connecting to the public infrastructure. The department occasionally works on projects associated with buildings, riverfront facilities, parks, pump stations, bridges, and projects constructed by the internal maintenance group. The candidate should be able to communicate orally and in writing with engineering staff, contracted consultants, internal maintenance staff, construction contractors, residents, regulators, and other generally diverse clientele. The candidate needs to be friendly, personable, and detail oriented. The position includes office work as well as field work, sometimes in inclement weather. Work hours are generally an 8-hour shift between approximately 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. with occasional extended hours during the construction season.
QUALIFICATIONS:
The minimum qualifications for this position include an AA degree or technical certifications, but preferably an AS degree. The ideal candidate will possess a 4-year technical or engineering degree. Other desired experience and qualifications include civil project experience, project management, Autocad software, drafting, Iowa DOT project development and material inspection, field surveys with total station or GPS, and other windows-based office software. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Drivers License. Employees must live within 15 air miles of Burlington city limits. Must be able to pass a background investigation, physical exam, and drug test.
ANNUAL SALARY:
The expected starting salary range for this position will be: $54,000 - $74,000 depending on skills, experience, and education.
