Job Description:

Job Title: General Trailer Technician

Department: Traffic

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function:

Inspects, diagnoses, and performs preventative maintenance as well as repairs on trailers. Assists others in shop as necessary. Assist trailer mechanics with all types of needed repairs.

Accountable and Reports to: Director, Truck Shop; Assistant Truck Shop Manager

Positions that Report to you: None

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist trailer mechanics with worn or broken parts such as wheel seals, brakes, lights, trailer plywood. Helps prep new trailers to be put into service. 65%

  • Installs and maintains the trailer side skirts. 20%

  • Performs repairs to trailer roll up doors. 5%

  • Maintains accurate record of work performed and parts used. 5%

  • Fabrication and welding (both steel and aluminum) 5%

  • Reports to work when scheduled and on time.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs minor repairs to building and service equipment.

  • Fills in for fuelers at the fuel island as needed.

  • Performs tire work.

  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:

  • Must be able to solve practical problems; several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Must be able to do Arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.

  • Must be able to interpret written work instructions; understand and follow verbal or demonstrated instructions; write identifying information; request supplies orally or in writing.

Education and Experience

High school or equivalent experience. Courses or technical certification in truck/trailer maintenance helpful. CDL license not required but helpful.

One year of similar or related experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be physically able to perform very heavy work: exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Visual requirements include vision from 20 inches or less to 20 feet or more with or without correction, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision.

  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:

The duties of this position are performed in a repair shop setting. There is exposure to dirt, noise, temperature extremes, dampness, vibrations, equipment movement hazards, dangerous chemical or solvents, and electrical shock. Occasional travel and overtime is required. There is occasional pressure to meet deadlines and work on multiple projects.

Equipment Used to Perform Job:

Standard tools and equipment used for truck maintenance and repair including welders, fluke meter, torch computer, service vehicle and electronic analyzers. Performs data entry on computerized inventory system. Must have own hand tools.
