Cambrex Charles City, Inc. is seeking a Chemical Operator to work at our manufacturing plant in Charles City, Iowa who shares the values and principles that characterize who we are and how we work. It's time to join our world-class team.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the Chem I Operator will be expected to successfully produce chemical and pharmaceutical products in our manufacturing environment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate reactors, centrifuges, filters, distillation columns, scrubbers, and vacuum systems.

  • Secure and charge raw materials in proper equipment.

  • Use manual and computer controlled devices to continually monitor and control the process and equipment; setting controls on valves, vacuums, pumps, pressures, etc. according to designated procedures to achieve desired results.

  • Perform various operations such as solvent extraction, hydrolysis, precipitation, filtration, crystallization and centrifugation.

  • Perform reactions, solvent and sulfuric nitrations, sulfonation, esterification, amidation and acetylation, as necessary.

  • Record all materials used and batch information on manufacturing report.

  • Assure area is kept clean and all precautions are taken to prevent environmental spills and control discharge to WWTP at acceptable limits.

  • Assist in training new Operators.

  • Drum compounds and hazardous waste; label according to federal standards, load waste trucks.

  • Complete safe work permit (SWP), lockout/tagout (LOTO), line entry, confined space and hot work permits.

  • Troubleshoot problems in safe and effective manner.

  • Perform basic laboratory testing using proper equipment and methods (K.F. for water, pH, specific gravity, chlorides test, etc.). Interpret and act on results.

  • Clean all equipment used (boil, scrape or scrub) following designated procedures.

  • Assist in other areas of plant operation as needed.

  • Adhere to all DEA, OSHA, EPA, FDA and cGMP regulations as they relate to the operation of the chemical production facility.

  • Follow all company safety rules and practices.

  • Perform maintenance when necessary, including process set ups.

Job Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • 3 or more years of experience in a manufacturing environment or related business

  • Good communication skills, both oral and written

  • Strong mechanical aptitude/knowledge

  • Shift assignment may vary. Must be able to work nights and weekends as needed
