Principal Financial Group Actuary - Life Risk Modeling in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

We’re looking for an Actuary to join our Life Risk Modeling team. In this role, you will lead a tactical team, perform asset liability management (ALM) work, and synthesize complex analyses to develop clear, actionable recommendations for senior management!

  • Perform cash flow testing and asset adequacy analysis to ensure long-term solvency and financial resilience, aligning with regulatory requirements and actuarial standards of practice.

  • Research and stay apprised of changes in pertinent regulations to ensure compliance in analysis and decision making. Apply actuarial analysis in the development and maintenance of sound, efficient, and accurate systems to support calculations and recommendations.

  • Lead or participate in business unit or cross company projects as a subject matter expert. Provide analytical and research-based consultation to achieve cost effective and strategic solutions.

  • Contribute to financial and strategic planning initiatives within business unit by identifying key priorities based on internal and external needs.

  • Responsible for duties associated with management of staff including, but not limited to: hiring, salary administration, and performance management. Provide strategic direction and leadership to direct reports on the day-to-day functions of their jobs.

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent required

  • A Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, or global equivalent, or Enrolled Actuary and 8+ years actuarial experience required

  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, the Actuarial Standards of Practice promulgated by the Actuarial Standards Board, and the Code of Professional Conduct of the AAA and the SoA is required

  • Basic knowledge of Life Risk Management and Asset Liability Management

  • Informal or formal leadership experience

  • Must maintain continuing education requirements as specified by the SOA or AAA

  • Good communication skills and knowledge of spreadsheet and database or similar PC software packages, or ability to learn

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$137000 - $207000 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Work Environments

This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
