Principal Financial Group Associate Director Manager Research & Selection - Alternatives in Des Moines, Iowa
Responsibilities
The Associate Director will serve as the lead analyst covering Alternatives investments (Hedge Funds & Private Markets) for Principal Asset Allocation's ("PAA") investment strategies on the Manager Alpha Research & Selection (MARS) team. In addition to the ongoing monitoring of existing hedge fund and private market investments, this role will work closely with and oversee an external investment consulting relationship utilized to source, screen and select funds and strategies, including the coordination and leading of engagements with managers. The analyst is expected to form supported views, express conviction, and assist PAA's PM team in identifying best-in-class alternative investments.
Responsibilities
Serve as the asset class expert for liquid alternatives and privates (real assets, equity, and credit). This includes conveying a deep understanding of PAA strategies’ objectives and investment processes to understand how underlying investments apply.
Work closely with external investment consultant to conduct research and evaluate opportunities across liquid alternatives and all private market segments to form supported views, express conviction, and deliver forward-looking allocation recommendations to the PM (portfolio management) team.
Work closely with the PM team to oversee existing hedge fund strategies and private market investments including the facilitation of ongoing reviews.
Proactively engage with senior team members on research of new ideas, themes, strategies for PAA funds.
Given the private market nature, this role will emphasize the development and maintenance of relationships within the industry to have insights and leads on deal pipelines/fund launches.
In addition to working collaboratively with PAA's PM team, this role will also work closely with the Director of MARS to contribute to the evolution of the team's processes by proactively suggesting and developing new ideas and insights.
Contribute to asset class thought leadership content
Occasionally represent the MARS team to internal and external constituents (i.e. client meetings, industry conferences, etc.)
Mentor, guide and provide direction to MARS analysts
Qualifications
We’re looking for someone with:
Bachelors degree in business or related field, preferably with a major in finance or economics
8+ years of experience in investment management or manager research
Demonstrated experience and success in conducting open architecture manager research
Solid understanding of investment managers and general knowledge of current economic and financial market conditions. Proven ability to efficiently and effectively research, compile, and analyze information required
Advanced Excel ability and proficiency with PowerPoint
Preferred Skills:
Proficiency with alternatives databases and indices
Experience in private credit and private equity
MBA or CFA
A high degree of professionalism required. Must be able to stay organized, prioritize, manage expectations, and attend to details in a fast-paced work environment, and wisely use resources available
Must have excellent analytical, written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range
$153000 - $207000 / year

Work Environments
This role offers the ability for in-office or hybrid (blending both office and remote work in a typical workweek) work arrangements. You’ll work with your leader to determine which option may align best based on several factors.
Location
This role will be based out of Principal Asset Management locations which include Des Moines, New York City, or Seattle.
