Overview

Kemin Nutrisurance (KN) is hiring an Associate Scientist in Des Moines, Iowa! In this role, you will be responsible for conducting applied research in the field of savory flavor chemistry. KN is the Pet Food and Rendering Technologies Division of Kemin Industries. Successful candidates will have scientific curiosity, excellent scientific skills in experiment design and data collection.

Responsibilities

  • Compile information that is required for the development of new palatants from protein hydrolysates, reaction flavors and flavor spikes.

  • Monitor and read contemporary technical materials and report on new developments described in the literature and at technical meetings and conferences.

  • Use the information to conceive, develop, test and evaluate new flavor products that provide novel solutions to palatability issues.

  • Initiate and lead product development efforts at bench, pilot and production scales. When necessary, refine production protocols leading to performance improvement and cost savings.

  • Execute a continuous evaluation of new and existing ingredients and technologies with regard to their functionality, implementation and feasibility.

  • Prepare project summaries for internal and external use. Prepare formal project summary reports for internal archives.

  • Prepare patent applications concurrent with the development of novel and proprietary technical innovations.

  • Participate at Product Innovation Process meetings to facilitate development of new products and/or processes. Based on priorities established, participate in project teams.

  • Assist in writing patent applications regarding novel palatants and processes dealing with palatant production.

  • Participate in the internal and external communication of results via scientific papers, conferences and seminars.

  • Ensure all tasks are followed according to Kemin’s system procedures and internal instructions of the quality system.

  • Work closely with other functional areas to ensure that new technologies are developed in an efficient and timely fashion.

  • Interact with Product Management and Technical Service team to address technical questions and provide solutions to problems.

  • Be knowledgeable in and interact with Regulatory Affairs group to ensure research efforts are in keeping with current industry and governmental policies.

Qualifications

  • PhD in Flavor Chemistry, Biochemistry, Food Science or equivalent with 3+ years’ experience in an industrial research setting is preferred.

  • Experience in flavor analysis using instrumentation including GC/MS, LC/MS

  • Experience as an effective project team player, leader, and motivator.

  • Solid understanding and adherence to the Servant Leadership philosophy

  • Ability to work independently, and have the ability to work in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment

  • Strong experimental design and problem-solving skills.

  • Good written and oral communication skills, suitable for external presentations.

  • Advanced computer knowledge (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.)

  • Understand and perform basic statistical analysis.

  • Fluent in English
