Job Description

SHIIP/SMP Customer Services Specialist —Iowa Insurance Division

The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and Senior Medicare Patrol (SMP) are services of the Iowa Insurance Division, funded by federal grants and the state of Iowa. A network of 300+ volunteer counselors and 140 sponsor sites provide SHIIP and SMP services across the state.

SHIIP helps Iowans on Medicare with questions and problems related to Medicare and their health insurance options. SMP’s goal is to help Iowans prevent, detect and report Medicare

fraud.

This position is lead for the SHIIP/ SMP Consumer Assistance Toll Free Line, responding to consumer calls from across the State. With the support of the SHIIP/ SMP team, this role will respond to basic Medicare questions, connect consumers to their local SHIIP/ SMP office, and refer complex cases as needed. Medicare experience is not necessary, appropriate training and resources will be provided for the right candidate.

This position is located at 1963 Bell Avenue, Des Moines, with teleworking available one day per week.

Consumer Assistance Toll-Free Line

  • Answer questions presented by callers accurately and adequately

  • Refer callers to local SHIIP/ SMP offices when appropriate.

  • Complete any follow-up to calls necessary, including subject matter research.

  • Alert director to actual or potential problems experienced by callers.

  • Be courteous, competent and professional with callers.

  • Communicate concerns, questions, suggestions for 800# and program improvements to director.

  • Work to increase knowledge base and keep it current. (Medicare, Medicare Supplement Insurance and Health Insurance)

Data Entry

  • Complete required program reporting and perform data entry.

  • Perform data entry of counseling and outreach reports, and other reports as required.

General Clerical Duties

  • Assist staff with assembling materials for program activities and mailings.

  • Faxing and scanning as requested.

Key Skills

  • Commitment to serving Medicare beneficiaries and vulnerable populations.

  • Fluency in Spanish strongly preferred.

  • Attention to detail, strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Willingness to learn from training, colleagues and volunteers to build Medicare knowledge.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Experience equal to three years of full-time clerical or closely related work;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalency or satisfactory completion of a recognized correspondence or formal job-related training course at the high school or equivalent level such as that offered by WIN, OEO, CEP, CIVEC or similar programs, for one year only of the required experience;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting nine months or thirty semester hours coursework in an accredited business school, college or university for each year of the required experience;

OR

certification from the State of Iowa Administrative Assistant Certificate Program will substitute for six months of the required experience;

OR

employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of eighteen months of full time experience as a resident treatment worker or Clerk–Advanced.
