Wellmark - Des Moines Contract Negotiator & Sourcing Consultant in Des Moines, Iowa

What's the role? Our ideal candidate will enjoy leading contract negotiation and managing supplier relationships of moderate risk and complexity, preferably with a technology background. You will utilize procurement best practices to set negotiation strategy as appropriate with vendors and suppliers and control all aspects of the negotiation process. You will be expected to provide knowledge and expertise to customers and stakeholders to identify and deliver optimal business solutions. Lastly, you will be responsible for analysis and acquisition of goods, services, and software to create effective agreements.

What does it take to make the cut? At least five years of experience in a legal, contract, compliance, governance, or procurement environment preferably including a strong understanding of contracts. Ideal candidates must have strong negotiation skills and be known for their integrity. To be successful in this role, you will be expected to interact and communicate effectively with various leaders throughout the organization as well as a plethora of internal and external stakeholders.   • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Contract Law, Legal, Compliance, Supply Chain, or related field or direct and applicable work experience.

  • Minimum 5 years related work experience in legal, contract law, contact compliance, governance, sourcing, or procurement with specific experience reading, interpreting, understanding, and drafting contract language.

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in consulting with business stakeholders demonstrated by a high level of business acumen as well as the ability to conduct needs analysis, understand strategic business initiatives, define requirements, recommend solutions, and influence decisions.

  • Strong negotiation skills and demonstrates a high degree of integrity

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute/lead negotiations that generate economic value and reduce business and legal risk

  • Strong familiarity with project management processes and methodology requirements

  • Strong proficiency in all verbal and written communications including spelling, grammar, punctuation, and composition.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, with the ability to positively influence, while building collaborative relationships with all levels in the organization.

  • Must be organized, detail-oriented, and able to multitask, adapt to shifting priorities, and be a solution-oriented creative thinker.

  • Ability to work without close supervision, exercise independent judgement, and communicate effectively with all levels of personnel where tact, diplomacy, and good judgement are essential.

  • Ability to think strategically and pro-actively partner with internal business partners to drive results, including advanced knowledge of the role of sourcing and contracting in meeting company goals, and how procurement creates value for the enterprise with a good understanding of defined business goals and strategies.

a. Provide consultation with business stakeholders to identify and deliver optimal business solutions. Conduct analysis of vendor contracts and identify inconsistencies with contract standards, business goals and company initiatives.

b. Execute the end-to-end strategic sourcing process for assigned business function, which includes gathering data, conducting market research, benchmarking and identifying potential vendors, conducting vendor due diligence, and recommending the appropriate sourcing methodology approach RFI, RFP, reverse e-Auction, etc.. Ensure the standard process for sourcing events and contract negotiation is consistently followed including providing thorough documentation.

c. Partner with stakeholders to create a negotiation strategy, including the appropriate sourcing methodology to ensure a successful vendor selection process is followed. Create and issue the appropriate procurement documents and facilitate and collaborate with all support functions during the sourcing process. Analyze vendor responses, create vendor scorecards and facilitate discussions with business stakeholders.

d. Set negotiation strategy for vendors as appropriate and control all aspects of the negotiation process. Conduct necessary due diligence needed during all vendor negotiations and facilitate discussions and decisions from support functions such as legal, third-party security, audit, vendor management, etc.

e. Responsible for negotiating savings and overall total cost of ownership/value in all negotiations to drive optimal value for Wellmark and ensure all savings and cost avoidance are documented in a timely manner.

f. Responsible to provide exceptional customer service to all business partners including setting clear expectations on the end-to-end sourcing process, frequency of updates, and ensuring all business partners are communicated with on a timely basis for all projects.

g. Participate in companywide business change initiatives and any PMO projects in order to drive both administrative and medical expense reduction.

h. Coordinate internal business partner and vendor execution of all assigned contracts, statements of work, change orders, addendums, and other required legal documents. Negotiate contract language to achieve Wellmark’s contract standards and proactively anticipate technology, market and business issues.

i. Proactively manage contracts through the contract lifecycle management process in the area of support by providing strategic thought leadership to business partners, understanding business partner goals, and by providing sourcing plans to deliver results.

j. Maintain relationships with potential and existing vendors, such as coordinating vendor presentations and conference calls. Establish and maintain a good rapport with executive management, and vendors to optimize negotiation, savings and service improvements and problem resolution.

k. Review and recommend improvements and innovations to existing processes on a regular basis to improve efficiencies in procurement services.

l. Proactively utilize all procurement services tools, and provide timely updates/details on all projects within the procurement software solution and to business partners.

m. Maintain and support process compliance with corporate policies and in adherence with the corporate purchasing policy.
