A prominent service company is looking to grow its team by hiring a Controller through Robert Half. The leadership position is responsible for an accounting and clerical department. As the Controller, you will be planning and directing all accounting operational functions, handling the accumulation and consolidation of financial data for internal and external financial statements, evaluating accounting and internal control systems, and leading departmental staff. The permanent Controller position is situated in the Des Moines, Iowa area.

Key responsibilities

  • Complete tasks beyond formal job responsibilities

  • Analyze, apply and improve policies, procedures, controls and most methodologies

  • Manage monthly and annual close of income statement and balance sheet, the reconciliations of accounts, and G/L analysis

  • Drive the timing for monthly billing and other cash management techniques to ensure the timely cash collection

  • Manage finance department operations, including accounts payable, billings & collections, and payroll

  • Analyze deliverables of self and team to confirm they meet client expectations

  • Prepare cash-flow reports, projecting cash needs at weekly and monthly intervals, daily cash management

  • Manage the creation of the annual budget and forecasts and monitor them on a monthly basis

  • Give executive committee and partners monthly financial reports

  • Collaborate with executive team and partners to support efficient and effective firm-wide operation

  • Advance Finance Department initiatives, such as software and systems implementation and other departmental or firm-wide improvements, as needed, with research, planning and implementation

    Requirements - Progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller preferred

  • Prior work in technology, analytics and management experience desired

  • Self-driven motivator who takes initiative on projects with a strong ability to understand and solve creative challenges

  • Outstanding analytical, quantitative and social skills

  • Experience working in a dynamic and changing company environment a plus

  • Able to build and deliver effective presentations to audiences with wide-ranging backgrounds

  • Advanced credentials such as a Masters of Business Administration / MBA or Certified Public Accountant / CPA are preferred

  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics or other business related field

  • Ability and willingness to meet business critical deadlines

  • Prior work done in public accounting is desired

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Proven knowledge of month end closings

  • Company Internal Control experience

  • Financial Statement experience desired

  • Strong familiarity with Mentoring New Hires

  • Experience with GAAP Accounting

  • Financial statement preparation experience

  • Strong communication and social skills
