MidAmerican Energy Company Director, Regulatory and Business Unit Accounting in Des Moines, Iowa

The director, regulatory and business unit accounting directs the financial and regulatory accounting functions including management reporting, regulatory analyses, affiliate charges, research and review of all elements affecting MidAmerican Energy Company, Midwest Capital Group, its business units and affiliates. Responsible for the indirect management of the accounts payable department that supports multiple platforms including MidAmerican Energy Company, Midwest Capital Group, BHE Renewables and BHE Transmission, and the administration of all fuel contracts and partner billings for jointly owned generating facilities. This position manages accounting and regulatory relationships between all affiliates, business units and the accounting organization. Analyzes and advises management and business unit employees on accounting, regulatory and affiliate issues and their impact on specific transactions. Recommends action to management based on analyses. Provides assistance to management and business units to determine the accounting and regulatory impact of proposed and current transactions. Develops corporate policies, procedures and controls to ensure the integrity of the regulatory and business unit financial information and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.

Analyze and advise management and business unit leaders on accounting, regulatory and affiliate issues and their impacts. (20-25%)

Responsible for the development of accounting policies, procedures and controls to ensure the interests of the company's customers, regulators, shareholders and management are being met. (20-25%)

Lead/participate on committees and task forces inside and outside the company on regulatory and accounting issues facing the company or business units. (0-5%)

Responsible for indirect management of the accounts payable department and administration of fuel contracts. (10-15%)

Direct development and implementation of effective financial and operational information systems to meet both current reporting needs and future requirements. (5-10%)

Research, analyze, interpret and make recommendations on regulatory and affiliate accounting issues to management. (15-20%)

Direct compilation and preparation of information for regulatory filings/reporting. (15-20%)

Responsible for overseeing documentation and compliance of internal controls and related Sarbanes Oxley requirements. (5-10%)

Prepare and oversee both written and oral testimony in support of rate cases, cost adjustment clauses and other regulatory proceedings. (0-5%)

Prepare and deliver both written and oral presentations on complex issues for management. Use personal computer based systems and software to compile and prepare reports, graphs and charts of data developed to include in the presentations. (5-10%)

Direct hiring, review and training of staff positions. (0-5%)

Perform administrative activities necessary for the effective management of the department, including employee safety, selection and development of employees, salary administrations, budget administration, employee counseling and motivation, organization goals and objectives and planning, organizing, integrating, measuring and reporting the work performed within the department. (0-5%)

Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (0-5%)

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business; master of business administration or certified public accountant preferred. (Typically six years of utility accounting related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

Eight years' experience in regulatory accounting, with emphasis in business unit and affiliate issues, including three years supervisory/management responsibilities.

Superior accounting and finance skills with experience in regulatory analyses.

Strong personal computer skills; proficiency in Word, Excel, Access, Oracle and PowerPoint; demonstrated ability to understand and utilize computer systems and applications as tools for analysis.

Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to develop and conduct presentations.

Effective interpersonal skills and leadership abilities. Strong leadership abilities to effectively manage a large group of individuals and lead project teams to achieve desired results.

Strong project management skills; the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
