The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is seeking a highly motivated independent contractor to join our organization as a consultant to serve as the Executive Director of the National Hypertension Control Roundtable (NHCR). NACDD is a Member-based not-for-profit Association that improves the health of the public by strengthening state-based leadership and expertise for chronic disease prevention and control in states and at the national level. NACDD's role continues to be that of standing in the gap, linking resources with its member-experts and together creating a safer, healthier and more equitable America.

This consultant will serve as the project lead for the NHCR. With oversight from the NACDD Associate Director of Programs, the Executive Director is tasked with implementing the NHCR’s first strategic plan and guiding the transition of the roundtable from the formative founding phase to an established active roundtable.

Project Description

The National Hypertension Control Roundtable (NHCR) is a multisector group of public, private, and nonprofit organizations unified to improve national hypertension control rates from about 50% today to at least 80% by 2025. The NHCR was formed in 2020 after two national partner meetings convened by CDC’s Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP). These partner meetings were designed to initiate a national dialogue to address the challenges surrounding hypertension control. The NHCR will serve as a forum to continue that national dialogue and foster efforts to improve hypertension control in the United States. Launched in February 2020 with more than 50 founding members, the NHCR is committed to meeting the challenge of hypertension control head on, both individually and through NHCR activities. Essential Duties and Responsibilities (SCOPE OF WORK):

  • Establish permanent leadership, board structure, and board succession planning for the NHCR;

  • Liaise with NHCR board Steering Committee, Executive Committee and staff key committees and action teams;

  • Ensure NHCR committees and action teams are meeting regularly and have actionable goals.

  • Guide NHCR board and committees to set key metrics of success and gather data regularly from the partners to document progress toward goals.

  • Ensure implementation of the NHCR in accordance with the by-laws, strategic plan and board guidance.

  • Communicate regularly with funders, member organizations, and potential member organizations to provide status updates, needs, and future plans; Manage and guide contractors as needed

  • Design, organize and execute the NHCR annual meeting as well as other meetings as needed.

  • Grow NHCR membership.

  • Ensure NHCR members represent all of the sectors that have been identified as having a role in achieving the goals of the NHCR.

  • Facilitate partnership between leadership organizations and membership organizations

  • Cultivate, write, and promote NHCR success stories, best practices, and lessons learned to highlight hypertension control in communities.

  • Report to the NHCR Board and funder at least quarterly.

  • Performs other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • Master’s degree in public health or equivalent and 10 years relevant experience working with national organizations and partnership building

  • Strategic Leader with the ability to execute both technical and strategic solutions to further the success of the organization

  • Experience leading national partnerships, particularly with members operating in a volunteer capacity

  • Experience working with boards/steering committees

  • Experience with collective impact processes, coalition building and equity and justice work.

  • Experience managing large groups with a wide variety of perspectives

  • Experience with consensus-building and meeting design and facilitation

  • Experience with identifying sustainable solutions to maintaining the NHCR; being knowledgeable about fundraising strategies to sustain a national coalition

  • Strong communication skills and ability to adapt messages to different audiences (membership, funders, board)

  • Ability to be self-driven and results-oriented with a positive and creative approach to problem-solving.

  • Ability to effectively plan, organize, direct, control, and execute work with limited supervision and within established timeframes and budgets.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects on behalf of the NHCR and be a forward planner and strategic thinker.

  • Ability to work with a high level of independence to prioritize tasks and organize limited resources to meet goals and deadlines.

  • Strong critical thinking and decision-making skills

This position is an independent contractor position. To qualify to be a NACDD contractor, the applicant must have the following by the start of the contract:
