Job Description
The Iowa Auditor of State (AOS) Office is seeking individuals to join our team as full-time Investigative Auditor. The Performance Investigation Division is responsible for investigating suspected embezzlements.
Duties include conducting planning, research, and interviews, developing audit objectives and work plans, collecting and analyzing information, developing audit findings and recommendations based on analysis, drafting reports, and reviewing workpapers for accuracy. Audits are conducted individually or in teams, depending on project scope and schedule.
Minimum educational requirements include:
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, and business and/or
• Graduation from an accredited two- or four-year degree in criminal justice or
• Equivalent or experience equal to two years of full-time work in investigations.
• Will also consider any applicant that has graduated from a business college or community college with knowledge of accounting.
Beyond the basic educational requirement, all auditors are expected to exhibit a positive, professional demeanor, demonstrate good communication skills, and possess the ability to work well with people.
Desired qualifications/skills include:
• Strong knowledge of accounting policies and procedures.
• Experience with state and federal programs.
• Knowledge and skill to evaluate compliance laws, regulations, administrative rules, and entities policies and procedures.
• Strong research and analytical skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Flexibility, initiative, and good problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
• Ability to plan and organize work to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Preference is given to those who have the professional certification of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and/or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
Continuing professional development is required and is achieved through on-the-job training, in-house training programs and outside training courses and seminars. The Office of Iowa Auditor of State supports staff members in their efforts to obtain the professional certification of Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE) by providing a tuition reimbursement program for courses or certificate review classes related to obtaining on of these certifications.
Some overnight travel may be required. Time spent traveling and away from home varies according to each individual audit assignment. Reimbursement for transportation, meal, and lodging expenses will be provided according to state guidelines.
The Auditor's Office is exempt from the state's merit system administered by the Department of Administrative Services. Therefore, it is not necessary for candidates to complete the certification process that is required for state offices under the merit system. It is the policy of the Office of Auditor of State to conduct background checks on all finalist candidates prior to any offer of employment.
Salary commensurate with experience.
This is a non-merit position with the Office of Auditor of State . Candidates must follow the instructions in the "To Apply" section. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in accounting or finance.

Additional Qualification Requirements
Employees in this class must commit to pursuing certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).
Travel, including overnight travel, may be required for positions in this class. Employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.
