Position Summary

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer like you to join our amazing Des Moines, IA Manufacturing plant.

Since 1945, the Bridgestone Des Moines plant has produced agricultural, construction, forestry and off-the-road tires. With more than 70 years of history in the community, many of the 1,300 teammates in Des Moines are second- or even third-generation teammates.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will research, plan, design, develop, and implement/install mechanical products and systems such as

instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical transmission, thermal, hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production related equipment. As an Engineering Professional you will apply advanced knowledge of a job area typically obtained through education and work experience. Problems faced are difficult and sometimes complex.

Responsibilities

In this role, your primary responsibilities will include:

Engineering design, development, installation, and support

  • Responsible for Mechanical expertise and serving as technical mechanical lead in assigned area.

  • Work within assigned area with Cross Functional Team members to understand existing and future designs, safety impact, workflow, productivity, etc.

  • Lead continuous improvement and corrective action activities & projects as assigned and prioritized within CFT with emphasis on scrap and waste reduction.

  • Participate in monitoring and evaluating the performance of existing systems, processes and technologies and recommend modifications and enhancements to improve Safety, Reliability, Quality, and overall Efficiency.

  • Work with Cross Functional Team in assigned area to resolve problems relating to mechanical systems.

  • Participate in routine discussions with maintenance team to determine root causes of machine failures and develop countermeasures to prevent reoccurrence. These items are of critical importance to improve overall reliability and call rank reduction of manufacturing equipment.

  • Responsible for Safety Design Process: Risk Assessment, Risk Mitigation, Dynamic Safety Testing, and Validation of Safety Systems.

  • Design Mechanical safety systems/barriers – provide CAD drawings of designs for review and quoting/procurement process.

Project Management

  • Analyze project requirements, identify, and address design parameters, engineering challenges and to ensure solutions are implemented accurately, timely and within budget. Serve as mechanical technical lead, planning and organizing portions of a project. Budget, manpower, and equipment utilization.

  • Design/develop Project Scope, Project Budget, Project justification/feasibility, prepare Funds Request/Project documents, Procurement of components (RFQ’s, SAP Ordering/Budget Tracking), Installation & Testing, Equipment Release to Production, & Verification of Project Closing (Documentation for Maintenance, Stock Item Request, & Lessons Learned).

  • Manage projects such as new machine installations, upgrades, etc. These projects may range from $5K to $1.5M.

  • Oversee project workflow and support internal and external resources to ensure on-time delivery of projects, meeting quality standards and within budget.

  • Provide Contractor oversight of technical trades to ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements, for all activities, are observed and implemented. Adherence to Plant/Industry safety rules compliance.

  • Participate in all project phases to include design, fabrication, implementation, factory acceptance testing (FAT), commissioning and daily operation.

Consulting and Communications

  • Actively participate in daily morning cross functional team meetings as the technical mechanical lead in assigned area.

  • Provide timely updates as to progress status of daily and long-term issues being addressed as prioritized by Area Business Manager and assigned.

  • Communicate with CFT and management regarding major project status and overall project progress.

  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines, consultants, management, and department teammates to ensure overall success.

  • Provide technical support for customers as requested.

Maintenance of Expertise

  • Understands industry trends, direction and standards that guide new technology offerings, and uses technology and market intelligence to provide strategic recommendations on initiatives to achieve business objectives; attends trade shows, technical seminars, and reads technical publications to keep abreast of the latest technology.

  • Provides training to other engineers, maintenance, and production operations teammates.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements:

· Typically requires a bachelor degree.

· A minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree without experience; or equivalent experience.
