Job Information

Meta Mechanical Engineering Lead, Bombyx in Des Moines, Iowa

Summary:

Our use of the internet for work, education, health care, and social connection continues to increase, with data consumption per person growing 20 percent to 30 percent annually. Despite this rapid growth, nearly half of the world is being left behind, either lacking adequate access to the internet or going completely unconnected.Bombyx is an aerial fiber deployment system that makes it faster and cheaper to deploy fiber, the most scalable communications technology that has over 1,000x the bandwidth of any wireless technology. Latin for silkworm, Bombyx is our attempt to make the single biggest drop in the cost of terrestrial fiber deployment by combining innovations in the fields of robotics and fiber-optic cable design to increase the amount of terrestrial fiber on land — without the expense of trenching to lay fiber underground. We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our team and take ownership of critical system components of the Bombyx robot design.

Required Skills:

Mechanical Engineering Lead, Bombyx Responsibilities:

  1. Design of complex electromechanical systems

  2. Development and evaluation of candidate system architectures

  3. Flow down of system requirements to SWaP-C subassembly/mechanism specifications

  4. Selection and sizing of machine elements including motors, bearings, gears, lead screws and guide components

  5. Selection of optimal materials for application based on critical parameters such as strength, stiffness, weight, tribology and thermal and galvanic compatibility

  6. Static and dynamic structural analysis

  7. Design and sizing of bolted and bonded joints

  8. 3D model and 2D drawing generation, surfacing, use of master models and flexible assemblies, manipulation of large assemblies, configuration management, and motion studies
