Robert Half Payroll Specialist in DES MOINES, Iowa


Job Purpose:

Describes why the position exists in the company. Gives the overall end result. This position will perform all aspects of payroll for the U.S. and Canada including payroll accounting to support the Human Resources and Finance departments. Ensure payroll is processed on time, accurately, and in compliance with government regulations for salaried, hourly, and union employees. Complete tax payments and returns with all taxing jurisdictions’ and maintain accurate employee data as it pertains to all payroll components. Assist management with reports and inquiries from team members to provide the best customer service.

Essential Functions:

Lists major actions performed in the job. Describes what occurs and the reason the action is taken. Provides impact of each action by indicating percentage of time spent performing the functions. Function % of Time Spent 1. Processing of Bi-Weekly Payroll: Reviewing timecards, calculating and balancing payroll, sending payment files to the bank and distributing employees’ pay statements 35% 2. Pay taxes and file reports for all government jurisdictions (weekly, monthly quarterly) 15% 3. Complete year-end processes including W2s and T4s (Canada) and government filings Dec-Feb 65% 4. Reconciling general ledger accounts and posting payroll and month end journal entries 10% 5. Maintaining software programs used by payroll including modifications, enhancements, and training 10% 6. Creating and updating reports for management 5% 7. Participate in continuing education on legislative changes and payroll best practices. Read payroll updates from E& Y Tax as well as APA’s publications 5% 8. Respond to customers’ inquiries: employees, tax jurisdictions, third party vendors… 10% 9. Maintain documentation and procedures 5% 10. Duties of the Stock Transfer Agent 5%



Describes the minimum education and experience, certifications, licenses, physical demands, working conditions and skill sets needed to perform the job. College degree or equivalent, plus 4-6 years’ experience in payroll including tax and payroll accounting. Certified Payroll Profession (CPP) designation required or working towards certification Excellent communication, leadership, problem solving, training, exercise good judgment, customer service and maintain confidentiality. Strong understanding of payroll accounting and Microsoft Office skills specifically Excel and relational databases. Must be able to work in a deadline driven environment and have a high level of diplomacy and confidentiality.
