Principal Financial Group Senior Associate, Manager Research & Selection - Quant (New York, Seattle, or Des Moines) in Des Moines, Iowa
What You'll Do
We are looking for a Senior Associate who will serve a dual function, covering traditional investment strategies and developing quantitative techniques and tools for Principal Asset Allocation (PAA) on the Manager Alpha Research & Selection (MARS) team!
MARS is a new team supporting PAA’s $132+ billion in assets under management (1/31/2023) - including $30+ billion in external sub-advised, private fund, mutual fund, ETF, and other investment strategy vehicles - serving a global client base. The individual can be a generalist or have an equity/fixed income strategy specialty and will work in close collaboration with other MARS analysts for public markets strategy coverage. The Senior Associate will be a key contributor responsible for selecting new external strategy ideas, monitoring existing portfolio positions, and partnering closely with PAA portfolio managers to drive alpha through strategic and tactical strategy allocation decisions. In addition to contributing to traditional due diligence coverage, this role will lead quantitative efforts to help MARS improve organization, efficiency, and effectiveness with sourcing, screening, analyzing, and monitoring investment strategies. This is a new role with opportunity for a creative and entrepreneurial-minded individual then to own development of critical and visible new tools and processes.
Responsibilities
Serve as a generalist or asset class expert for public market investment strategies. This includes conveying a deep understanding of PAA strategies’ objectives and investment processes to understand how underlying investments apply
Develop quantitative tools and methods to help MARS and PAA more efficiently and effectively source, screen, analyze, and monitor investment strategies.
Collaborate closely with the PM team to oversee existing covered strategies including the facilitation of ongoing reviews
Proactively engage with senior team members on research of new ideas, themes, strategies for PAA funds
Development and maintain industry relationships with existing and prospective external investment partners
Contribute to the evolution of the team's processes by proactively suggesting and developing new ideas and insights
Occasionally represent PAA and the MARS team to internal and external constituents (i.e. client meetings, industry conferences, etc.)

Who You Are
Bachelors degree in business or related field, preferably with a major in finance, economics, or a quantitative/statistical area
5+ years of experience in investment management, manager research, or a related quantitative investment research focus
Validated experience and success in conducting open architecture manager research
Confirmed understanding of investment managers and general knowledge of current economic and financial market conditions. Consistent track record to efficiently and effectively research, compile, and analyze information
Must have strong quantitative modeling abilities including advanced Excel
Programming skills and experience preferred, such as Python, R, Matlab, Excel VBA
Skills That Will Help You Stand Out
Experience with Morningstar Direct, FactSet, eVestment, or similar tools
Database language skills and experience (SQL, AWS, Snowflake)
Experience with data visualization tools (PowerBI, Tableau)
MBA or CFA
A high degree of integrity. Must be able to stay organized, prioritize, handle expectations, and attend to details in a fast-paced work environment, and wisely use resources available
Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
Salary Range Information
Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.
Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)
$123000 - $167000 / year

This role will be based out of Principal Asset Management locations which include Des Moines, New York City, or Seattle
Work Environments
This role offers the ability for in-office or hybrid (blending both office and remote work in a typical workweek) work arrangements. You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
