Overview of the role:

The Sr. Manager of Business Development (MBD) will be responsible for the generation of new sales with medium to large enterprise organizations in an assigned territory. This is an individual contributor role. The candidate must be prepared to represent the value proposition of American Express Global Business Travel. The Sr. Manager will set the strategic direction for bids and participate in key prospect meetings & negotiations that will yield top-line growth for Global Business Travel and will be accountable for driving the entire sales cycle. The successful candidate must have knowledge in technology solutions and a keen ability to deliver client based best practice options. Responsible for providing integrated solutions across all platforms (online, offline and mobile) to help corporations manage and optimize their travel spend/investment. This is accomplished through process and purchase savings. Responsible for building and maintaining relationships with key internal stakeholders along with building and developing senior level client contacts to work and contribute in a team approach. The key role is to grow and increase revenue through a combination of skills:

  • Exceptional business development and consultative sales skills.

  • A sophisticated ability to synthesize client needs.

  • Identify opportunities, drive growth and develop innovative, value‑add and client focused solutions.

  • A strong understanding of the external market and ability to develop and deliver a compelling value proposition.


  • Identify and acquire new business travel customers by selling travel products and solutions enhanced with innovative technology support a highly productive managed business travel program.

  • Increasing profitability by proactively identifying new opportunities and delivering innovative solutions that continue to add value and expand Amex’s web of influence.

  • Developing an in-depth understanding of key business drivers, organizational culture and the competitive position of clients.

  • Strategic MBD must be able to ‘get under the skin’ of the individual clients they work with and understand their individual needs, motivations and ‘hot buttons’ in order to develop truly customer focused solutions.

  • Researching the marketplace and competitor products and services to highlight the value that distinguishes GBT products, and specifically leverages MI, benchmarking, and technology as critical value drivers.

  • Participate and support client events and forums, including agenda ideas and content, guest speakers, panelists, and facilitators specific to driving customers to American Express Global Business Travel.


  • 3 to 5 years’ business development/sales, consulting, or procurement experience required.

  • Proven success in consultative selling is required, in addition to demonstrated success increasing client revenue and profitability.

  • Skilled at pipeline management using Salesforce CRM.

  • Demonstrated ability to create strategic vision, build action plans, set goals.

  • Proven innovative problem-solving abilities and decision making skills required, in addition to project management, prioritization, and planning skills.

  • Strong negotiation skills, including the ability to handle objections and achieve mutually beneficial solutions.

  • Demonstrated ability to proactively build and maintain a comprehensive network, both internally and externally, to successfully navigate through client organizations.

  • Highly articulate written and verbal communication skills with a sophisticated range of communication and presentation skills to present complex ideas in a simple and compelling way to a wide variety of audiences.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn, understand, and articulate key product and value proposition knowledge in a variety of contexts.

  • Strong financial acumen and analytical mindset required to leverage the key drivers of profitability.

  • Strong Business acumen required to communicate the Amex/Business Travel value proposition up to and including the “C Suite”.

  • Strong collaborative skills.

  • Advanced Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills required.

  • Must be able to travel 25-30% of the time.
