Job Description

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) is on the search for a team member who is passionate about supporting local businesses and fostering economic growth as ourSmall Business Specialist.

The Small Business Specialist works with our Downtown Resources Team to provide resources to downtown communities throughout the state of Iowa, specializing in the services below.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Program Development and Outreach:

o Collaborate with local Main Street program directors to enhance their understanding of the role of economic vitality in the context of the Main Street approach and downtown development strategies. o Engage personally with business owners to discuss their needs and concerns.

o Develop customized written recommendations for each business, addressing areas such as Business Planning and Marketing.

•Retail Trend Tracking and Communication:

o Provide valuable trend insights to retailers and local Main Street Iowa programs.

o Foster effective communication channels to support local businesses.

•Business Succession Training:

o Facilitate training sessions on business succession planning.

o Empower business owners to navigate transitions effectively.

• Program Administration: Open 4 Business Grant

o Manage the Main Street Open 4 Business competition, including marketing, judging, and awards.

o Support local Open 4 Business competitions.

•Talent Attraction Program Support:

o Train Community Champions throughout the program life cycle.

o Build relationships with leads and Community Champions, enhancing services of the Talent Attraction program.

The Small Business Specialist position is a non-contract, non-merit position that is classified by the State of Iowa as an Economic Development Specialist 2. This position is exempt (salaried) per FLSA regulations.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in a related field and experience equal to two years of full-time work that involved responsibility for interpreting laws, rules and regulations, and/or securing compliance with them; or compiling and evaluating statistical, historical, economic, business, financial, or technical related or program data; or developing, administering and/or deploying projects/programs;


an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of the above required experience for each year (thirty semester or equivalent hours) of the required education.
