Job Description

Job duties include the following:

  • This position performs advanced level architectural drafting and design services for interior design and space planning projects pertaining to furniture or construction modifications in state owned and leased buildings and facilities.

  • Prepares furniture drawings, elevations, sections, 3D models, door number plans, evacuation plans and preliminary construction plans in CADD and writes specifications for furniture, space planning and construction projects for state owned and leased buildings and facilities.

  • Designs furniture plans and construction drawings utilizing current Americans with Disabilities Guidelines (ADAAG) and current egress, fire code and Iowa State Building code.

  • Reviews contractor's shop drawings to ensure compliance with specifications and contract agreements by verifying technical accuracy according to accepted guidelines and precedents.

  • Works with employees, supervisors, administrative and program officials, and customers to gather project data; identifies and defines design and space planning issues; conceptualizes possible solutions; presents solutions and recommendations for approval; furnishes advise on important design issues and develops design documents/drawings to initiate and modify architectural, interior design and space planning solutions. Works with customers to develop long-range space utilization plans.

  • Maintains knowledge of current literature, trends, developments and codes in the field of architectural, furniture and interior design.

  • Manages space management projects from conception to completion, including traveling to project sites to inspect furniture/construction projects in progress and to clarify the drawings and specifications to contractors.

  • Reads, analyzes and interprets architectural drawings, blueprints, documents, contracts and contractual requirements and relates drawings to construction operations.

  • Works and communicates with internal and external clients and customers to meet their needs in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner. Committed to the highest quality service.

  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor or lead worker.

Candidates should have a majority of the following essential functions:

  • Abide by and enforce all office/agency standards, guidelines, practices and policies and aligns behavior with the needs, priorities and goals of the organization. Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with internal and external customers.

  • Drafts and maintains furniture drawings, elevations, sections, 3D models, door number plans, evacuation plans and preliminary construction plans in CADD, Cap Studio and Adobe Acrobat Pro and efficiently operates drafting equipment, architectural scale, engineer scale, laser tape and tape measure.

  • Independently creates thorough specifications for furniture, space planning and construction projects and communicates recommendations and solutions timely on space planning projects effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Designs and evaluates furniture plans and construction drawings to ensure compliance with the current Americans with Disabilities Guidelines (ADAAG) and current egress, fire code and Iowa State Building code. Maintains knowledge of current literature, trends, developments and codes in the field of architectural, furniture and interior design.

  • Works with customers to gather project data and identifies and defines design and space planning issues. Manages space management projects from conception to completion.

  • Conduct personal visits to furniture/construction projects to monitor progress with contractors.

  • Displays a high level of initiative, effort and commitment toward completing assignments efficiently. Demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail and performs duties satisfactorily with minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in architecture, interior design or architectural engineering and one year of work experience in architecture, interior design or architectural engineering;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year of work experience in architecture, interior design or architectural engineering for one year (thirty semester hours or its equivalent) of the required education with a maximum substitution of four years.
