Principal Financial Group Sr Data Engineer I in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

We are looking for a Senior Data Engineer to join our Enterprise Data Analytics team. You will work with other data engineers and data scientists to develop data solutions that facilitate creation and operations of machine learning models to provide insights and automated decisions across the enterprise.

To succeed in this role, you will need to:

  • Recommend ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality. Understand the trade offs between technical, analytical and product needs and lead to solutions that take all the needs into account. Develop strategies for data acquisition and influence others within the business area through explanation of policies, patterns and practices.

  • Provide data engineering and analysis expertise to improve efficiency across multiple technologies. Set standards and be responsible for technical aspects of data management functions including creating, collecting, loading, transforming, cleansing, processing, storing, analyzing, and visualizing data.

  • Work directly or in support of data science/analytics to design, develop, test and integrate data from various sources into large-scale processing systems and databases to use in providing insights that solve business needs.

  • Responsible for creating, vetting, and documenting complex data management process designs, models, and architectures by setting and understanding architectural patterns and principles, researching new technologies and approaches, driving requirements, testing, debugging, documentation, quality assurance review, implementation, securing and maintenance. Regularly deliver solutions on-time and constantly work to make accurate delivery on estimates.

  • Provide technical advice and weigh in on technical decisions that impact other teams or the company at large. Research, influence and propose new technologies. Own technical testing and performance plan for work efforts.

  • Provide technical guidance to team members on integration and functionality of infrastructure components. Make others better through code review, thorough documentation, technical guidance, mentoring or servicing as lead on a project.

  • Demonstrate influence at the BU level. May be responsible for staff recruitment, performance evaluations, training and career development. Set clear goal expectations for members of a team.

  • Set direction at the project/service level and consistently influence decision-making at the Pillar/Product level. Own and design all data development layers of a solution. Set direction for team in proactively following established controls, policies, regulations and recommend mitigation strategies during development. Coordinate with others to work through and create action plans as a result of risk assessments or detected vulnerabilities.

  • Perform other job-related duties or special projects as required.

  • Bachelor's degree plus 6 - 10 years related work experience or a Master's in related field plus 2 - 8 years related work experience

  • Demonstrable experience as an IT professional

  • Proven leadership and presentation skills required

  • Knowledge of financial services products, processes and business unit applications preferred

  • Ability to work directly with data and datastores through programming language such as Python, SQL, and Scala.

  • Experience with a variety of data modeling techniques and data structures

  • Ability to optimize data for analytics and data science

  • Experience building/operating systems for data extraction, ingestion and processing of large data sets

  • Knowledge and direct experience using business intelligence reporting tools

  • Experience building data products incrementally and integrating and managing datasets from multiple sources

  • Advanced planning, organizational, problem-solving, analytical, decision-making and communication skills required

  • Must be able to effectively communicate strategies and designs to all levels of the company

  • Must be able to maintain a high degree of accuracy and confidentiality

  • May be required to provide on-call support

Skills That Will Help You Stand Out

  • Experience with developing and deploying AWS infrastructure via CDK and developing data pipelines using tool such as AWS Glue and Snowflake Snowpark

  • AWS Certifications, such as Data Engineering Associate, Machine Learning Associate, or Solutions Architect Associate preferred

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$95200 - $182400 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.
