As a State Income Tax Manager in National Tax, we will look to you to apply your knowledge to a wide range of tax areas and processes, devising strategic outcomes to some very complex issues. Our National State Income Tax practice provides unique opportunities to work closely with our leaders and senior advisory partners to support our ongoing strategy.

Your key responsibilities

It’s fair to say there’s no average day for a State Income Tax Manager, so you’re likely to spend your time on a diverse array of projects, responsibilities and tasks. We’ll look to you to support our service offerings and initiative leaders (e.g., Structuring, Look back Review, Controversy, Tax Reform, and Pre/Post Transactions). This includes knowledge management, marketing, and support of client service teams in the Regions. You’ll help develop service offerings, thought leadership, education, and other written communications as well as coordinate and manage technical resources and updates. Whatever you’re working on, our State Income Tax practice and our clients will turn to you for up-to-the-minute tax advice they can always rely on. To make that happen, you’ll be working in a highly collaborative culture, where listening to and sharing information with colleagues is an essential part of the role.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Developing strong relationships across a network of existing and future clients and key stakeholders

  • Analyzing an evolving portfolio of complex tax operations to provide meaningful business insights

  • Identifying potential opportunities and risks and communicating these to our clients

  • Developing clear, intelligent plans and approaches to improve our clients’ tax activities

  • Researching our clients’ business operations and building long-lasting relationships to tailor your advice to their specific needs

  • Challenging the effectiveness of the tax strategy and approach for engagements

  • Identifying and implementing operational efficiencies

  • Learning and researching current market trends, to maintain your credibility as a trusted advisor

  • Coordinating technical update communications

  • Managing technical resources and tools

  • Focusing on people/talent development by counselling, coaching and impacting others

To qualify for the role you must have

  • A bachelors or master’s degree in accounting, finance, business or related field

  • Must have either a US CPA or be a member of US State bar

  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience in professional services or professional tax organization

  • State income tax advisory experience

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Experience managing budgets, people and projects

  • A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization

  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context

  • The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects

  • Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Experience supervising a motivated team of professionals, guaranteeing they have the skills, knowledge and opportunities to reach their full potential
