Job Description

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a reliable self-starter to work as a part of its Word Processing Center team at the State Training School (STS) in Eldora, which provides supportive counseling and behavioral health treatment for young men, ages 12-18, who were adjudicated delinquent. This is a full-time opportunity with a 5-day work week. The typical schedule is from 8:00 to 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday with occasional overtime opportunities during the evening or weekends if coverage is needed for Word Processing Center duties or the state Training School’s Switchboard operator.

This position works with STS treatment teams and administrative colleagues to ensure student files, standard reports, documentation procedures, and internal and external communication benchmarks are met. This is a small-team position with much of your work being done autonomously from your office. Additionally, this position provides occasional coverage for the STS Switchboard, driving communication regarding security, movement, emergencies, and visitors. This position works out of the Administration building and has very limited contact with students.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint is highly valued in this role. Ability to type 40 words per minute NET is required.

The successful candidate will have the following skills:

  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure

  • Ability to operate various kinds of office equipment (e.g. typewriter, printer, fax transcription equip., etc.)

  • Ability to interpret and apply STS policies pertaining to the word processing department

  • Ability to maintain accurate records and files for the facility

  • Ability to efficiently prioritize requests

  • Ability to function in a semi-autonomous environment with limited direct supervision

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) All of the following (a, and b):*a.Ability to type at least 40 WPM NET, demonstrated by the completion of a typing examination authorized by the Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources Enterprise;andb. One year of full-time experience in word processing functions such as: text editing and formatting, document storage and retrieval, and document merging experience.

2) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as a Word Processor 1.
