Definition & Duties
Under supervision is responsible for the security of inmates and employees at the jail. Operates control center, maintains intake and releases, serves as communications liaison, and documents prisoner activities.
Knowledge of & Ability to

Have sufficient manual dexterity to make handwritten notations and which permits use of a keyboard and mouse
Have sufficient vision which permits production and review of a wide variety of materials both in electronic and hardcopy forms
Work flexible schedule and occasional overtime as needed
Minimum Education, Training & Experience & Special Requirements
High school graduate (or equivalent).
Special requirements: Successful completion of 40 hours of continuing education in the administration of correctional facilities is required the first year and 20 hours of such education is required each year thereafter. State law provides that Matrons must be women, and only female applicants will be considered for this position as it is a bona fide occupational qualification (BFOQ). Must reside in Johnson County or within a twenty-five mile radius of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office within six months of hire. Must pass background investigation.

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Maintains security of the facility, ensuring only authorized personnel are admitted or allowed to leave, operating door controls, alarms and intercoms.
Serves as communications liaison between inmates and deputies by answering inmate intercom and relaying inmate needs.
Answers the telephone and responds to inquiries; and when necessary, routes phone calls.
Documents prisoner activities including intake and releases, court appearances, phone calls, visitation, etc. for each shift.
Performs general clerical tasks such as filing, photocopying, and processing mail,
May assist with female prisoners on an as needed basis. This includes the initial intake and booking process when the inmates are searched; performing record keeping functions at the intake stage; escorting the female inmates to the appropriate jail housing areas; and conducting periodic checks on their well-being while in custody.
Enters data accurately into county computer systems.
Participates in training/educational opportunities and work-related meetings as required.
Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, collective bargaining agreement, and safety practices.
Attends work regularly at the designated place and time.
