Johnston Community School District Grounds Maintenance Worker (6-month) in Johnston, Iowa

JOB SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, the Grounds Maintenance Worker performs manual labor related to the care and maintenance of district grounds including lawn care, snow removal, athletic/activity fields and restrooms, playgrounds, and parking lots; and equipment and vehicles.

Seasonal (mid-April through mid-October)


  • High School diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in grounds maintenance or related field

  • Valid Iowa Class C commerical driver’s license or willingness to obtain


  • Assists with preparation, maintenance and repair of all outdoor athletic and activity field turf and facilities.

  • Performs functions associated with groundskeeping and maintenance, including but not limited to, chemical/fertilizer application, planting, fertilizing, irrigating, mowing, aerating, edging, raking, trimming, weeding, seeding.

  • Inspects, maintains and repairs playgrounds and associated equipment.

  • Performs snow removal and pavement preparation of parking lots, sidewalks and driving lanes.

  • Serves as a point of contact for contractors.

  • Operates and regularly inspects various machinery, equipment and tools.

  • Assists with maintenance and repair of grounds equipment and vehicles.

  • Ensures satisfactory completion of work orders.

  • Works collaboratively with district personnel.

  • Demonstrates safety in all work practices and operations.


  • Assists with review of standard operating procedures and training plans.

  • Performs general grounds and parking lot maintenance

  • Transports and stores equipment, supplies and tools

  • Engages in professional development related to functions and responsibilities

  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Knowledge of and the ability to safely operate a variety of vehicles, machinery, powered equipment and tools

  • Ability to read and understand technical manuals and instructions

  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with contractors and service providers

  • Proficient in use of technology, programs and applications

  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills

  • Effective mathematical computation and record keeping skills

  • Initiative and ability to work without close supervision

  • Competent working in a diverse environment

  • Frequent walking, standing, squatting, crouching, kneeling and bending

  • Ability to lift, carry, push and pull up to 50 lbs. regularly and over 50 lbs. occasionally

  • Ability to push, pull and reach above shoulder

  • Frequent exposure to noise greater than 85dB

  • Outdoor work environment with moderate exposure to heat and cold

  • Exposure to fumes, odors, and chemicals

  • Close proximity to moving machinery and equipment
