The Valent Biosciences manufacturing site located on an expansive 73-acre site in Osage, IA is a state of the art 130,000 square foot plant and is the largest purpose-built biorational facility in the world. It serves as the manufacturing and quality control center for Valent Biosciences broad portfolio of fermentation products.

JOB SUMMARY and KEY OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this position is to facilitate sanitation activities in VBC Osage facility and A-to-Z. The position will be responsible for day-to-day execution of sanitation activities in the manufacturing environment, including the cleaning of both equipment and the facility. The position will ensure all Sanitary and Food Safety requirements are satisfied and coordinates all required transitions between the shutdown, sanitation, and startup of production lines. In addition, this role works cross functionally with production to assure cleaning, sanitation, and set-up programs and practices are appropriately applied throughout the facilities. The position will work closely with A-to-Z management and hygienist. The position will be responsible for writing sanitation SOPs and assist with product investigations. The position will provide frequent updates to the site leadership team and works closely with plant engineers and the pilot plant.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Directs / executes plant cleaning and sanitation programs and practices.

  • Develops and administers necessary programs and systems that ensure operability and cleanliness while driving a culture of peer-to-peer accountability for Safety, Quality, Costs, and Customer Satisfaction.

  • Serves as the principal liaison with the current Chemical and Pest Management provider.

  • Oversees maintenance of sanitation, ancillary, and production support equipment.

  • Develops and administers necessary programs and systems that ensure operability and cleanliness.

  • Develops and institutionalizes Master Sanitation Schedules, SOPs and Standard work for Sanitation and Set-Up processes. In conjunction with Document Control, assures that only the most current and approved versions of these control documents are available to those responsible for cleaning, sanitation and set-up duties.

  • Oversees relevant chemical, sanitation and pest management training for the plant.

  • Ensures sanitary compliance with all HACCP, Food Safety, and FSMA guidelines and policies. In conjunction with quality manager, investigates product and environmental out-of-limits situations, documents these investigations and implements sustainable corrective actions as required using established change management practices.

  • Supports and maintains a continuous improvement (CI) culture across assigned work teams; serves as a leader of change across the function. Actively seeks opportunities to optimize performance and identifies opportunities for improved efficiencies.

  • Maintains an engaged workforce by effectively coaching training and motivating team members. Utilizes various techniques and tools that focus on building capability, promoting teamwork and emphasizing cross-functional communication.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage sanitation program.

  • Inter-department communication from a sanitation standpoint.

  • Substantiate cleaning program.

  • Facilitates bioburden contaminations.

  • Prepare Master Sanitation Schedule

  • Report to Sr. Quality Manager.

  • Assist with continuous improvement opportunities derived from process deviations.

  • Develop and manage Environmental Monitoring program.

  • Proactive in trying to build stronger teams, inter-department/inter-location relationships, and harmony.

  • Ensures Quality Policy and procedures are followed.

  • Establish and maintain KPIs.

  • Assist with Bizzmine and Braincube solutions as it pertains to job function.

  • Initiates nonconforming investigations and corrective/preventive actions as needed.

    ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES and TASKS

  • Maximize NC, Deviation, and Remedial action efficiency and meet established goals.

  • Provides oversight of area(s) of responsibility and serves as a resource for problem solving and process improvement.

  • Supports and ensures compliance with all company policies and procedures of their responsibilities.

  • Monitors and ensures implementation of goals to meet established quality assurance, quality control, quality, and sanitation improvement plans.

  • Interacts with internal and external customers to ensure proper process flow and reporting.

  • Assist with raw materials quality/product safety.

  • Assists with updating of departmental controlled documents.

  • Participates in assigned training.

  • Performs other tasks as specified by the Sr. Quality Manager.

  • Become proficient in Bizzmine and Braincube as it pertains to sanitation.

  • Participate in the Internal and External Audit programs.

  • Present continuous improvement opportunities as the facilitator and/or observed process.

  • May require up to 20% travel and periodically allowed to work off site depending on assignments to be performed.

  • Establish sanitation consortium and best practices with other USA-Valent locations.

  • Participate in Quality Leadership Team meetings and safety programs.

    PREFERRED QUALITIFICATIONS and EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene, microbiology, or related sciences.

  • 2-3 years’ experience as a sanitation specialist.

  • Food safety or hygiene coordinator.

  • 1-2 year’s root-cause analysis or Investigation experience.

  • 2-3 years’ experience with microorganism techniques or other lab techniques in the food industry.

  • Proficient with cGMP and GLPs.

  • Good interpersonal communication, public speaking and writing skills.

  • Ability to build relationships needed for program success.

  • Ability to analyze statistics and identify trends and perform continuous improvement opportunities.

  • Ability to create and manage KPIs.

  • Good business acumen.

  • Understanding the importance of customer satisfaction.

  • Ability to think out of the box.
