Job Summary

Work Shift

1 - First Shift

The Engineer I - Metallurgy performs metallurgical testing and evaluation and provides metallurgical consulting to product design engineering globally in areas of material selection and performance, heat treatment, hardfacing applications and new advances in materials joining. This role helps develop quality requirements with carbide inserts for Cutting Edge tooling based on application and advances in technology.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Exhibit the Vermeer characteristics of caring culture, demonstrating agility, customer focused and stewardship while modeling the associated behaviors.


Perform metallographic sample preparation including sectioning, mounting, polishing on metals and polymers.


Conduct root cause failure analysis to identify the initiation site, failure mode of ferrous and non-ferrous material, castings, forged and welded parts.

  1. Prepare samples and perform

material testing including tensile, Charpy V impact test, macro and micro hardness, chemical composition analysis using OES, XRF, FTIR and SEM/EDXS

while assuring timely flow of projects through the lab.

  1. Provide recommendations to product design engineering personnel for material selection based on application, design advantage, manufacturability and advances in technology. Specify heat treatment procedures to engineers and suppliers based on materials and performance requirements.

  2. Help develop and maintain quality control requirements for carbide inserts for cutting edge tooling including joining equipment and processing procedures.

  3. Guide product design engineering, service, and customers on hardfacing applications based on materials, performance, and advances in technology.

  4. Maintain Vermeer Material Specifications


Education and/or Experience

  • 4-year collegedegree in

Metallurgical, Materials, or Welding/Materials Joining Engineering.

  • Orother 2 or 4-year college degree witha minimum of 4 years' related experience.

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of alloy microstructures, phase diagrams, and structure property correlations with respect to mechanical behavior of metallic materials.


Basic knowledge of polymers, elastomers, ceramics, and composite materials.

  • Ability to operate standard metallurgical equipment such as optical emission spectrometer, digital microscope, micro and macro hardness, tensile, impact and other testing machines.

  • Knowledge of powdered metallurgy and sintered carbide processing is a plus.

  • Experience with abrasive technology and joining carbides to steel is a plus.

  • Understanding of CAD, Technical Drawing, and Schematic Reading.

  • Ability to identify root cause of defective parts of product design and manufacturing to resolve customer notifications of quality issues.

  • Ability to demonstrate basic process of welding, assembly, and mechanical tools.

  • Ability to comprehend blue print reading and measurement reading.

  • Ability to effectively manage time and resources to meet the needs and schedules of internal customers and respond immediately to production questions and crisis with solutions.


Up to 15% domestic and/or international travel by car or plane may be required.

Work Location

ONSITE: A team member's day-to-day work is best done on a Vermeer campus. If work content can be occasionally completed at an offsite locati n, discuss potential arrangements with your manager.
