POSITION PURPOSE

Under limited supervision, performs radiographic procedures at a level not requiring constant guidance or assistance. Performs a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgment in applying prescribed ionizing radiation for diagnostic purposes. Assumes responsibility for particular areas of specialization as assigned. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

1.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.

2.

Performs all routine radiographic procedures and views according to department procedures.

3.

Performs and/or assists with radiographic and fluoroscopic procedures.

4.

Prepares and/or administers contrast media, i.e., orally, IV, rectally, etc. per department and Radiologist's policies.

5.

Demonstrates correct and adequate anatomical positioning skills.

6.

Provides radiation protection to patient, staff and self according to prescribed safety standards, ALARA

7.

Demonstrates complete working knowledge of routine radiographic equipment within the department.

8.

Performs portable radiologic procedures in surgery, emergency room or inpatient rooms.

9.

Practices sterile technique and prevents cross contamination to patients and equipment.

10.

Checks requisition for physician notes and/or special instructions; consults with Radiologist or other physician as necessary.

11.

Confirms patient identification and introduces self to patients.

12.

Describes procedure to patient and/or family members.

13.

Performs daily warm-up for radiographic room (where applicable), safety and visual maintenance checks and reports results to appropriate personnel.

14.

Prepares and maintains patients exam file, history including contrast reaction and quality assurance and billing as required.

15.

Retrieves and calls reports to physician offices, nursing units, surgery, ER, etc. upon requests.

16.

Completes all paperwork where applicable including consent forms.

17.

Maintains ongoing education that includes annual training on safe radiation practices in the radiology environment.

18.

Recognizes emergency situations, initiates code procedures and administers first aid/CPR as needed.

19.

Performs office procedures in absence of clerical support personnel.

20.

Keeps room and department clean, neat and orderly, and maintains room supplies and outdates.

21.

Assists student technologist in relating theory to clinical practice. Willingly completes student evaluations. Communicates with program faculty regarding students, policies and procedures.

22.

Assumes charge position as required in absence of supervisory personnel.

23.

Transports patients to and from department.

24.

Participates in standby on call coverage of department as required.

25.

Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees, and Mercy business.

26.

Is knowledgeable of and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients. Complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies and Procedures.

27.

Demonstrates working knowledge of Radiology PACS

28.

Actively participates in department meetings, committees, conferences, and in-services.

29.

Demonstrates general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)

30.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be ARRT registered and registered by the State of Iowa. Prefer one year of experience in hospital setting. Must maintain BLS certification. Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team. Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.) Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Mercy and Trinity Health.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must successfully pass employment physical examination and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives. Must possess the ability to comply with Mercy and Trinity Health policies and procedures. This job is categorized as "Medium Work". Has the physical stamina to meet the requirements of this job. Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and /or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly. Must be able to handle stress effectively. Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, internal and external, which may affect the work place, such as infectious disease, chemical and/or chemical fumes, dust, noise, physical injury from an out of control patient, and adverse effects of inclement weather which may occur.
