Shift: 3pm - 9:30pm Monday - Friday | No weekends or holidays

A Technical Assistant, under the direction of the Manager of Radiology Services or assigned supervisor, is responsible for transporting patients; assisting in lifting, moving, and attending to patients; maintaining cleanliness of transportation equipment and patient waiting and dressing areas; assisting in the radiology offices and assigned imaging area. May be assigned specific technical responsibilities for preparation of patients, processing images, maintaining equipment, maintaining quality control, and collecting quality improvement data. Functions resulting in an exposure of patients to radiation, ultrasound or magnetic sequences may not be assigned. Assists with office work & secretarial duties as warranted. Assists technologist with patient care when needed and the duties deemed necessary to support the mission and goals of Unity Point- St. Luke’s

  • Checks for and acquires patient consents from nursing staff, reports any special conditions (i.e. NPO or 24 urine saving) and communicates preps for diagnostic procedures prior to transporting patient.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of RIS/EMR to inquire and print reports for Radiology Services.

  • Is able to prioritize work appropriately and assists others as time and work load allows.

  • Confirms patient’s identity and maintains confidentiality when dealing with data related to patients.

  • Possesses ability and makes good independent decisions based upon a knowledge of the overall departmental functions, policies and procedures. Completes usual and special assignments with minimal supervision and guidance.

  • Assists Technologists in identifying and transporting patients to and from the Radiology Department.

  • Practices sterile and isolation techniques resulting in the prevention of cross-contamination and infection.

  • Maintains cleanliness of equipment and work space, stocks supplies to patient dressing rooms, and reports equipment malfunctions in a timely manner.

  • Consistently demonstrates attention to detail in following protocol for release of imaging documentation and imaging file management.

  • Demonstrates professional conduct towards patients and visitors and maintains privacy of the patients, their test results and records.

  • Maintains communication with Imaging Administration, staff and physicians in a professional manner. Seeks the advice of the Radiology Manager with problems before implementing a solution.

  • Accurately maintains the necessary documentation and records to comply with regulatory guidelines established by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the DNV (Det Norske Veritas) accreditation body

  • Promotes a positive public relations image through productive and professional interactions with nurses, physicians, visitors, patients, peers, supervisors, and other hospital personnel.

  • Facilitates learning environment for Imaging staff including Radiology Technology students and new hires through in-service instruction and clinical supervision.

  • Adheres to hospital & departmental safety regulations, guidelines, policies, procedures, & protocols.

  • Actively participates in Departmental PI projects

  • Minimum Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Work Experience

  • None

  • Preferred: Experience in a healthcare/direct patient care setting.

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Required - CNA certification in the state of Iowa

  • Required Course(s)/Training: Current CPR Certification

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Machines: Various technical systems including but not limited to fax machine, copy machine, printer, phones, CD burner, PACS, RIS, EMR, IV Pumps, Suction Machines

  • Equipment: Wheelchairs, Carts, Steris Chair, Geri Chair, Walkers, Alternators, Gait Belts

  • Administrative: The Transporter shall transport patients to and from the department in a timely fashion with concern to patient comfort and safety. He/she will have communication skills necessary to deal with nursing units, technologists and physician staff. He/she is responsible for ensuring appropriate paperwork is transported with patients. He/she will assist with office work, plus other duties when needed, and keep the Department in a clean, orderly fashion. He/she must be able to concentrate on the task at hand and consistently follow procedures, must demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, cooperation and maintain an attitude of professionalism while strictly adhering to all hospital and department safety regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures, including MRI room safety guidelines.
