The qualified applicant will participate in the development process to infuse user interface design principles into websites, web applications, and other digital products. This position requires an experienced Human Factors Specialist who will participate in all aspects of the User-Centered Design (UCD) process. This position will oversee several initiatives and personnel providing web design and development support.

  • Consult with stakeholders and makes recommendations regarding the benefits and value of user-centered design (UCD)

  • Plan UCD strategy for projects based on customer needs, budget, and priorities and integrate tasks into the overall development process

  • Support requirements gathering to balance user needs with business goals

  • Define UX standards and templates for websites, web applications, and other digital products

  • Conduct user research through interviews, surveys, and web analytics; Define user goals and information needs

  • Create task and system flows; Develop scenarios and user personas

  • Evaluate legacy systems by conducting baseline tests, heuristic evaluations, cognitive walkthroughs, and analyzing any existing user feedback

  • Design clean, consistent user interfaces based on best practices, user research data, and knowledge gained from product analysis; Adhere to established design guidelines

  • Produce wireframes and interactive prototypes to depict the user interface

  • Outline recommended organization of content/information based on users’ mental model and information architecture principles

  • Design and conduct remote and in-person usability tests with interactive prototypes; Identify issues and provide recommendations for improvement

  • Define UI Specifications for handoff to development team; Work closely with UI and other technical roles to implement user interfaces

  • Produce client-ready deliverables and documentation based on templates

Basic Qualifications:

To be considered for this position, you must minimally meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed below:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, psychology, or information systems management with a minimum of 5 years of experience

  • 5 years of experience in Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) applying agile methodologies as appropriate

  • 3 years of experience designing responsive websites or web applications

  • Skilled at translating system requirements into user interfaces using prototyping tools, sketches, and other design artifacts

  • Ability to present data visualizations in meaningful dashboard layouts

  • Communicate effectively with all levels of the contract and customer organizations; Translate academic and technical terminology into common terms; Have strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Understand and apply Section 508 accessibility requirements

  • Meet deadlines with both timeliness and quality; Have strong organization and time management skills; Balance and prioritize work across multiple projects

  • Work independently and as part of a team

Preferred Qualifications:

Candidates with these desired skills will be given preferential consideration:

  • CDC experience and general understanding of the CDC public health mission

  • Experience using the web template

  • Experience working in a government contracting environment

  • Relevant on-the-job experience in designing usable and responsive websites or web applications
