Construction Services Carpenter/Lumber Yard Assistant

The Construction Services Carpenter/Lumber Yard Assistant constructs, erects, installs, and repairs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard conforming to local building codes. Also smooths and finishes surfaces of poured concrete floors, walls, sidewalks, or curbs to specified textures by performing the following duties.

Carpenter Duties

  • Shapes job materials to prescribed measurements.

  • Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them.

  • Communicates job progress and problems to supervisor.

  • Verifies trueness of structure with plumb bob and carpenter's level.

  • Erects framework for structures.

  • Builds stairs and lays out and installs partitions and cabinet work.

  • Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware, such as locks, letterdrops, and kick plates.

Yard Duties

  • Assists in keeping all inside and outside work areas extremely neat and orderly.

  • Unload trucks and put products away.

  • Pull orders.

  • Make deliveries.

  • Performs additional tasks that may be required.

Qualifications

  • Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.

  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) class A or B

Other Skills and Abilities

  • Understand all aspects of home and building construction which includes; framing, plumbing, painting, cabinet installation, dry- walling, tiling, and the effects and control of radon gas in construction
