Job Description

This position is located at EPICS and performs casework activities as a member of an office team to secure, modify and/or enforce child support and medical orders. Under the general supervision of the Child Support Recovery Supervisor, this position supports Child Support Recovery by providing a variety of administrative support duties of a quasi-administrative nature to conduct specialized technical and clerical processes. Communicates with a variety of organizations including: employers, financial institutions, human services, attorneys, clerks of court, county sheriffs and other related entities to achieve the goals of the Child Support Recovery program.

Responsibilities include various complex clerical and support tasks including processing of electronic mail and documents using a variety of office equipment. Work and communicate with internal and external customers in an effective and appropriate manner. Will work with customers who may be reluctant to establish, modify or pay child support orders. Requires a strong personality that can be tactful and compassionate under stressful or difficult situations. Employee may assist team with establishment and specialized enforcement tasks.

This position requires a highly motivated, organized individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to:

  • Interpret and follow oral and written instructions in completing tasks independently.

  • Obtain information from a variety of sources and to read, interpret and apply the information as it pertains to the Child Support Recovery program.

  • Exercise judgment in making non-technical decisions in accordance with policies and practices of agency served and laws or regulations controlling its operation.

  • Produce work with speed and accuracy.

  • Prioritize tasks and time to meet established performance goals and critical deadlines.

  • Accurately enter, retrieve, file, generate and correct case folders and/or information from ICAR and various data base systems.

  • Accurately sort and scan physical mail; index and retrieve electronic mail from Electronic Mail System.

  • Navigate efficiently in a Windows environment. Knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel; Google mail and the ability to learn and use other personal computer programs as necessary.

  • Interact with employees and customers in a manner that is consistent with quality customer service delivery.

  • Work productively in a team environment. The ability to participate in group processes; encourages and facilitates cooperation, pride, trust and group identity, fosters commitment and team spirit; works with others to achieve goals.

  • Resolve problems/issues by using good listening and positive conflict resolution skills.

  • Adjust and adapt to work pressures or change without unusual stress reactions.

  • Perform basic mathematical calculations needed to accurately reflect support obligations.

  • Produce written materials that are clear, concise and accurate and that are grammatically correct.

  • Comprehend and adhere to the confidentiality provisions stated in the Code of Iowa.

  • Maintain high attendance as excessive absenteeism negatively impacts the child support program.

  • Travel occasionally when work is required outside of the office.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Experience equal to one year of full-time clerical office or closely related work.

  • A total of one year of education and/or experience (as described in number one), where one month of accredited post-high school course work in a secretarial, business, or closely related program equals one month of full-time experience.

  • A total of one year of education and/or experience (as described in number one), where 30 semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience.

  • A total of one year of education and/or experience (as described in numbers one through three), where certification from the state of Iowa Administrative Assistant Certificate Program equals six months of full-time experience.

  • Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of six months of full-time work as a Clerk.
