As a Senior Applications Tech Lead at Athene, you will be accountable for architecting and optimizing systems used to support New Business, Contact Center, Post Issue Processing and Agency areas. This position is considered the top technical expert within the team and will participate in the design, integration, security, testing, and operation of critical business systems. The candidate will be expected to provide technical leadership to the teams’ developers and Tech Leads to ensure strong coding outputs, quality and productivity. Successful candidates will have a proven track record for delivering software solutions that conform to stringent design and coding standards, will have deep hands-on coding experience. It is expected that this position will be experienced in cloud technologies as we continue to look at opportunities to move our applications to the cloud.


  • Provide holistic technical leadership across all areas of Operations IT, with a focus on delivering information and solutions that are timely, accurate, reconciled and complete.

  • Assist in the development of internal policies and procedures (standards, controls and metrics) as a member of Athene’s Tech Lead Community of Practice.

  • Analyze application performance and trends, working with the different teams to ensure our applications remain scalable and the performance meets critical SLAs.

  • Collaborate with Architecture and Technical Services team on solution design and delivery.

  • Coordinate project work for technical team members on assigned projects.

  • Design and maintain data quality checks including code inspections, unit testing, regression testing and documentation.

  • Document software architecture and flows.

  • Lead root cause analysis for major incidents and problems to ensure solutions are identified to prevent problems from reoccurring, as requested by the applications teams.

  • Mentor and coach Developers, ensuring compliance with technology standards and best practices.

  • Provide feedback to the Operations IT application owners on developer’s coding and skill deficiencies and help with defining training and development.

  • Work across the various Operations IT product teams to ensure logging and monitoring is properly designed and functioning for our critical business applications.

  • Create technology roadmaps for strategic applications including systems migration, system integration and incremental adoption of new technology.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 7+ years' required, 10 years' preferred, experience as a contributing and lead member of successful enterprise projects with at least 6 years of software development experience, utilizing Python, Java and relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred).

  • 5+ years of experience coding SQL with proven experience of optimizing SQL.

  • 3+ years of using DevOps tools like Bamboo, Docker, Jenkins, Git, Kubernetes.

  • Advanced knowledge in enterprise software patterns, cloud technologies, containerization, API design and integration and data science skills.

  • Experience with Agile Scrum development methodologies.

  • Experience with AWS cloud platform.

  • Background in Insurance/Annuities or Actuarial Science is required.

  • Bachelor's Degree in a technical field or equivalent professional experience.
